Filey Allotment & Garden Association
2009

Site designed by John Shackleton General Secretary.

Allotments have been in existence for 200 years, and in Filey, probably date back to the first world war, when food shortages increased the demand. Originally it seems there were two sites in Filey. One on Scarborough Road and the present site off Gardeners Court. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of information available about the history of allotments in Filey prior to 1939. Records show that the land now occupied by the allotments was sold by the North Eastern Railway Company to a Robert Osbaldeston Mitford of Mitford Castle in the County of Northumberland on the 11th of April 1913. The sale price is believed to have been £100. The land was then sold on to Filey Urban District Council on July 13th 1913, only 3 months later, for £400!! It is unclear whether allotments were there before, but they were certainly available to the public from that date.
In recent times the allotments merged with the Garden Association to become the Filey Allotments & Garden Association.
The site is leased from Filey Town Council and a committee of eleven elected members the President being the Mayor elect see to the day to day running and well being of the site on behalf of the Council.
Our objectives are to promote interest and assist members where possible with problems arising from, and/or related to horticulture.
To also co-operate with any committee set up by local Government Authorities and any other bodies furthering the interests of garden and allotment holders.
The site consists of 124 plots, each plot being either quarter, half, or full .The cost of each plot varies in price from £5 per annum up to £20 per annum this includes water but does not include the £1 yearly membership fee. Watering a garden with a hosepipe is not permitted but we may fill our water butts or baths etc. Associate members may also pay £1.00 per year which gives them access to the Trading Hut where goods
can be purchased at a reduced cost.
Tenants may submit a plan if they wish to erect a shed or a greenhouse, this is purely so we can keep the Allotments clear of any unsuitable buildings. All tenants agree to keep there plots in a tidy and weed free way so not to cause any problems with their Immediate neighbours.
Benefits are -
-
Seeds, Fertilisers and other gardening sundries may be obtained from the Trading Hut at special prices.
-
Membership of the National Association of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners.
-
A wealth of on site experience.
Fund raising events are held through out the year to help with the running costs i.e Plant Sales, we also attend various fund raising events put on by other organizations in Filey.
Once a year we hold an open day / show which is a great day out for allotment holders / gardeners and the general public.
